Self-Care/Wellness Workshop

Project title: Self-Care/Wellness Workshop

Participatory Budgeting funding request: $1705

Organization/Individual: Athena Bishop, Individual

Location: Quadra Village Community Centre

What is your project?

I have had the privilege of being part of the Quadra Village Community through volunteering and work. I have been given many amazing opportunities, and through the Participatory Budget Project, I saw a chance to give back. Quadra Village Community Centre is located directly across from the largest concentrated low-income housing development in Greater Victoria and in the heart of a low income, high-density, inner-city area of Victoria. Addressing a lack of opportunity for low-income children and youth is a key focus for the organization.

The Self Care/Wellness Workshop for youth will provide an opportunity for twenty youth ages 9-24 in the City of Victoria to have access to free hygiene and wellness supplies. It will be a one-day event to give low income youth basic necessities towards feeling confident and building self-esteem.

As a staff member at QVCC, I will be purchasing supplies. Also supervising the supplies/packages and workshop itself. I will have the youth in QVCC’s Girls Group put together packages during programming the week leading up to the day of the event, including a discussion on what wellness/self-care mean.

The workshop will be held at Quadra Village Community Centre, and there will be twenty, gender-neutral packages with supplies they expressed need for during a group discussion. It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis to ensure fairness.

Youth will have an opportunity for an open discussion about Wellness and Self-Care in a safe and comfortable environment after receiving packages.

How does your project benefit the lives of youth in Victoria? The mission of Quadra Village Community Centre is to work together to nurture community well-being by providing services and programs to meet social, educational, health, employment, environmental and recreational needs of people in the Hillside-Quadra area in a safe and welcoming environment.

The Self-Care/Wellness Workshop will provide an equal opportunity for access to wellness supplies to help build self esteem and confidence in youth. It will encourage being kind to yourself, and practicing self-care. Many youth do not have access to these basic necessities due to low-income, and this workshop gives them the chance to get them in a safe and comfortable environment.

This workshop will also provide a safe space for questions and answers with staff and other youth in an open discussion. The ultimate goal is to create equal opportunity for all those who require these supplies and information.
